Afternoon Tea

Our Cheshire Candles Charity Afternoon Tea

It's that time of year again folks, doesn't time fly when you're having fun! So we now have details of our annual August Afternoon Tea. Neil & Anne Shirley have again kindly offered to host us at their house near Holywell. The event will take place on Sunday 10th of August from 1.00pm to 4.30pm. We plan to meet at the back end of the Grosvenor Garden Centre car park (Wrexham Road, Belgrave, Chester, CH4 9EB) at 11.45pm for a 12.00 get away.  Route details will be given out on the day.

Following about an hour's drive we will arrive at Neil and Anne's where we will be able to park up in the paddock as usual ready for the refreshments - please bring your own chairs if possible. We will also be running a plant sale for all the budding gardeners out there. For those of you who haven't got green fingers we will also be running a book sale - so something for everyone then. There is no charge for this event but as this is a fund raising activity for our Cheshire Candles Charity Run, donations will be expected. All proceeds will go towards next year's Candles Run's chosen local charity.

Please note that if bad  weather  (rain, high winds etc.) are forecast for the Sunday, the event will be    re-scheduled. A decision will be made on Thursday 7th August and if cancelled it will be posted on the Facebook page.

Thanks once again to Neil and Anne for allowing our MG's to park up for the afternoon and hosting the event. Please comment on the Facebook post about this event to express your interest, provide numbers and provide any dietary requirements - or alternatively text Steve on 07798 922548.

If you would rather go direct to Neil & Anne's, please email me at stevejbrace@gmail.com to let me know and I can then provide the address and postcode for you. If going direct please do not arrive before 1pm.

Visit to Old Ministry of Supply Factory at Rhydymwyn

Thanks to Neil Shirley, we have an event arranged to visit the old Rhydywyn Ministry of Supply site at Rhydywyn (Visiter Centre, 17 Nant Alyn Road, Rhydywyn, Flintshire, CH7 5HQ). This is now in the hands of the Rhydywyn Valley History Society who are restoring the site and wartime buildings and who run tours to enable the public to visit. During WWII this local site at Rhydywyn was used for the production and storage of Mustard Gas in its purpose built underground tunnels and later also used for the development of the UK's atomic bomb programme. A proper secret local location then!

The event will take place on Sunday 13th October. In the morning we will be shown a film of the site from the 1940's and told about its history. They have then suggested that you bring your own food for lunch and they will provide tea and coffee at £1.00 per cup. After our lunch stop we will be given a tour of the site and buildings with one of the History Society's guides. The cost will be £5 per head and for a slightly higher cost they may also try to open the tunnels for us as well - however this will be dependent on their own operational circumstances. Either way this is an event not to be missed in order to visit a proper part of Britain's hidden wartime past.

Times and details of where we will meet on the day will follow. However, If you wish to attend please comment on this Facebook post (or by texting me on 07798 922548) with numbers and also confirmation that you would be up for the longer tour including the visit to the tunnels if available (Please note that the tunnels are large enough for army wagons to drive in and are generally not claustrophobic).
