Sunday Drive with Sunday Lunch

Many of you will remember that last September Jan & Geoff very kindly put together a fabulous 100 mile run to celebrate 100 miles for 100 years of MG motoring. Well they have only gone and done it again, putting together another suburb 100 mile route for this September coming. We are calling it the Drovers Route 100 as it uses some of the old droving roads of North Wales.....just what it says on the can so to speak!  This promises to be a fantastic drive through Wales in our classics and one definitely not to be missed.

The event will take place on Saturday 21st September and we will be meeting up at the Ponderosa Cafe on the Horseshoe Pass, Llangollen (LL20 8DR) at 9.45am for a 10.00am get away. Route books will be given out on the day. We have factored in a couple of stops at Lynn Brenig (LL21 9TT) and at Bala (Woodys Cafe, LL23 7YE) should you need refreshments or/and a comfort break. Our end destination will be the Berwyn Arms on the A5 at Glyndyfrdwy, Corwen, LL21 9EY where we will be eating at about 2.30pm. If interested please see the Facebook post regarding this event and which provides details of the menu choices. Numbers and your meal options will be required by 5pm on 11th September 2024. Please provide these by commenting on the post or by texting me on 07798 922548.

Visit to Old Ministry of Supply Factory at Rhydymwyn

Thanks to Neil Shirley, we have an event arranged to visit the old Rhydywyn Ministry of Supply site at Rhydywyn (Visiter Centre, 17 Nant Alyn Road, Rhydywyn, Flintshire, CH7 5HQ). This is now in the hands of the Rhydywyn Valley History Society who are restoring the site and wartime buildings and who run tours to enable the public to visit. During WWII this local site at Rhydywyn was used for the production and storage of Mustard Gas in its purpose built underground tunnels and later also used for the development of the UK's atomic bomb programme. A proper secret local location then!

The event will take place on Sunday 13th October. In the morning we will be shown a film of the site from the 1940's and told about its history. They have then suggested that you bring your own food for lunch and they will provide tea and coffee at £1.00 per cup. After our lunch stop we will be given a tour of the site and buildings with one of the History Society's guides. The cost will be £5 per head and for a slightly higher cost they may also try to open the tunnels for us as well - however this will be dependent on their own operational circumstances. Either way this is an event not to be missed in order to visit a proper part of Britain's hidden wartime past.

Times and details of where we will meet on the day will follow. However, If you wish to attend please comment on this Facebook post (or by texting me on 07798 922548) with numbers and also confirmation that you would be up for the longer tour including the visit to the tunnels if available (Please note that the tunnels are large enough for army wagons to drive in and are generally not claustrophobic).

Drive It Day

Drive It Day’ is a national event and takes place every year at the end of April. Individual car clubs across the UK are encouraged to hold their own events and local runs. The aim is to celebrate the start of a new classic car season and to help raise awareness of the large and important extent of the classic vehicle movement within the UK. We at the West Cheshire MG Owners Club like to support the occasion so this year our annual Drive It Day will take place on Sunday 21st April 2024.

It will follow the normal format of a drive of about 80 miles with a mid-point coffee break.  We will be starting from:

Start - Hawarden Farm Shop, Chester Road, Hawarden, CH5 3FB

Please be at the shop by 11.15am for a 11.30am start - The cafe is open from 9pm, so you can always arrive early to grab a pre-drive coffee or even a breakfast roll.

MID POINT STOP:  Woody's Cafe, Penllyn Leisure Centre, Bala, LL23 7SR

Finish - Bryngwyn Hall, Llanfyllin, Powys, SY22 5LJ

At Bryngwyn Hall. We will have a tour of the house, by the hall's owner, the charismatic Lady Linlithgow. The hall has been in her family for over 200 years and is an important part of Welsh Heritage. Designed by Robert Mylne in the neo-classical design it is the last surviving example of his work in Wales and Grade II listed. The hall was mothballed in 1929 due to financial constraints and was passed over to Lady Linlithgow is a state of dereliction in 1987. She will explain how and why she has spent many years restoring the hall to its former glory which has been her life-long ambition.

Following the house tour, we will all sit down for a mouth watering afternoon tea (and I am told there is plenty of it!) within the hall (they are able to cater for gluten free requirements). Finally, a tour of the nine acres of award winning gardens that lead down to a beautiful eight acre lake - all set in sixty acres of oak studded parkland will suitably finish our day. Dogs are welcome on a lead in the gardens but are unable to enter the house.

Please see the Facebook post on this event where you can express your interest if you have not already done so. The club will be subsidising the event so the cost to you will be £22 per head. A £10 deposit per person will be required with the balance to be paid at a later stage. The deposit and the balance can be given to me at one of the club nights before the event (alternatively you can text me on 07798 922548 and I can make alternative arrangements to collect payment from you).

It should be a really interesting outing  and one not to be missed - with plenty to eat and see both inside and out!
