The Cheshire Candles Car Charity Run, which is organised by West Cheshire MG Owners’ Club, hit its 9th year in 2025. This year’s event was held on Sunday 11th May 2025 and started at Bellis Brothers Farm Shop, Holt, Wrexham. This year we were fortunate to be joined by a brand new all electric MG MG Cyberster kindly supplied by Holdcroft MG Cheshire Oaks. After a stunning run through North East Wales, Shropshire and Cheshire countryside the event finished at Cholmondeley Castle. The weather turned out to be a fine day which added to the fantastic scenery on route. Participants were given the opportunity to view the castle gardens and purchase refreshments in the garden tearoom.

All proceeds raised from the 2025 event were donated to the Wingate Centre in Wrenbury, Cheshire who support children with learning difficulties.

The Cheshire Candles Car Charity Run, which is organised by West Cheshire MG Owners’ Club, hit its 7th year in 2023. This year’s event was held on Sunday 7th May 2023 and started at Bellis Brothers Farm Shop, Holt, Wrexham. After a run through local countryside the event finished at the British Ironwork Centre, Oswestry.

We again supported two local charities, these being Hope House and Nicola’s Fund. Both are local charities that provide help and support for terminally ill Children.

The event proved to be another success, thanks to the good weather, and the coronation theme went down well. We thank all those who supported the event and look forward to seeing you again next year.

Story of the Cheshire Candles Charity Run, its name and its logo

The first Cheshire Candles Charity Run took place in May 2015, starting at Chester Castle with the Town Crier and Lord Mayor in attendance, visiting Ellesmere Lake and the Cheshire Candle Workshops before finishing at the Bhurtpore Inn, Aston, near Nantwich. 85 cars took part and it raised £2250 for the charity - Chester Aid to the Homeless. Subsequently we were asked “when will the next Candles Run be held?” This led to the adoption of the name you see today.

Additionally, that Charity used an orange logo in the shape of a pitched roof, which was incorporated into an orange octagon, leading to the Candles Run logo we still use now. Since then, the event has been held every year except 2020, attracting around 150 classic cars of all marques and during that time we have supported the following charities and raised over £25,000 – which includes two late season static shows at Chester Lakes near Balderton in aid of the Cheshire Fire Fighters charity. The charities we support are nominated by West Cheshire MGOC members.

2016: Sarcoma UK and Nightingale Hospice (Wrexham).

2017: Stroke Association Cheshire and Northwest Air Ambulance.

2018: Guide dogs training centre Cheshire and the Clwyd Special Riding Centre

2019: The MS Society Cheshire and Northern Lights Children’s charity

2020: Cancelled, but participant fees went to Brian Injury recovery & development and Clatterbridge Cancer Centre

2021: Hospice of the Good Shepherd, Backford.

All the money we raise from entry fees and the raffle go to our charities; the funds we need to run the event (about £1000) is raised from our sponsors, many of whom have been supporting us since 2015. Without their generous support the event could not raise the sums it does for the nominated charities. We have also enjoyed the support of the various locations used to start, rest midway and finish our runs. Again, their support is generous and unstinting (and free of charge!). We always welcome organisations and individuals willing to support our efforts, including our own members who so graciously provide most of the raffle prizes, some of the sponsorship and provide the small army of volunteers needed to manage the Runs as well.
